Dexter is a rescue Kelpie who was waiting in foster care for 12 months to find the right forever home. He is a high drive, ball-obsessed working dog who had no off-switch. He needed a home where he could use that drive for more productive activities than pestering people to throw his tennis balls. After less than 24 hours with us, Dexter is already learning some self-control and is now able to switch off and relax.
Dexter has many quirks, but most amusingly he is able to carry two tennis balls in his mouth, while collecting others with his paws and nudging them over to other dogs or humans! His entire life revolves around tennis balls so he of course, adores playing fetch (for 12 hours straight if you let him, trust me, we've done it!) Dexter has begun coming out of his shell and will even enjoy a cuddle! Several people have made comment that we must be crazy adding a high drive Kelpie to the mix with everything else going on in our lives, but what they don't realise is that rather than making life more hectic or out of control, Dexter has created a state of equilibrium within our home. Solo is smitten with Dexter and the two of them are usually found together, each with a ball in their mouth, parading around like kings. Soaks is happier because Solo is no longer pestering her to play and we are happier because our gang now feels complete. Yes, Dexter is a Kelpie who needs more to do than lying on the couch all day, but that's not the life we lead with our dogs. We expect a lot from them and for Dexter, our normal is exactly what he needs. Dexter has had some basic obedience training, though he definitely needs a lot of work on his recall (those big ears are painted on)! We have begun to work towards channelling his drive towards his training, where he is now learning to play tug, catch frisbees, trick training and the foundations of Obedience, Flyball and Agility. We look forward to seeing what unfolds for Dex who, from what we can see, has huge amounts of potential! Thank you to FarmDogz Rescue for the privilege of welcoming Dexter into our lives. |
